A Photograph | Broken Pieces | My Mother's Kitchen | Roses | Scared & Paralyzed | So Beautiful | Stones | Tasty Warm Inside | Windows
An open window
Two plates of food
One for my sister Niki
One for me
My mother hovers over us
Then turns and starts to shell green peas
My sister looks for the calf's liver
My mother has buried in the mountain
Of mashed potatoes
Niki is not fooled
She digs for the bits of liver
Waits till my mother has turned her head
Then throws them
Out the window
I watch transfixed
Life has gone out of me
The shell called Maria
Sits stiffly and eats
I am fixed
A butterfly with a pin through my middle
I sit stiffly and eat
My mother turns and stares
She knows I am dead
But she pretends
She pretends
I am alive
